Your Help Can Make a Difference

As our MTA presence increases in the Sportsman’s World, we are continually being asked to participate in different events. These are NOT scary or intimidating events to participate in, and generally fall into two categories.

The first is the Minnesota Education Association Conference, and the Sportsmen’s Show: These type of events usually involve giving out general information on trapping; what and who is the MTA; what are the current fur prices; and answering any questions the public may ask you. It is expected that you remain professional at all times, as you will run into people who are not favorable towards trapping. The booth at these types of events usually has tanned fur and brochures to hand out to the public.

The second type of event is where we are asked to do more of a demonstration on trapping. These events generally involve groups like the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, 4H, etc. The youngsters are typically divided into groups and will spend 15-30 minutes at a station. There are many options here and you can personalize how you would like to participate with the different groups. At these events, we bring basic traps and tanned fur. If time allows, we help the participants set traps with close supervision. You will need to be prepared to answer an assortment of questions.

The events described above do not require much effort on our part. The events are perfect opportunities to educate the public with the correct information about trapping. It is up to us to promote trapping in a positive light. The more we can do to combat the misinformation that the anti-groups put out to the public, the better off we will be as an organization.

I am writing this article because I need more volunteers to assist in these events. I usually receive requested for the MTA to participate in these events well in advance, so there is time to prepare and to ask for volunteers but sometimes it is a last minute thing, and I don’t have anyone to help me. I am asking that if you are be interested in volunteering at an event; please contact me or your district director. Please include how far you are willing to travel, and name-phone-email information and what area of the state you live in, as I get requests for all over the state. Remember, the Minnesota Trappers Association is only as strong as its members, and right now we need your assistance.

Thank you,
